This Story Just Breaks My Heart
I'm really disturbed by the story of the 8 year old boy accused of shooting his father and his father's friend. I just don't understand how the authorities could have interrogated a child like that without a parent/family member or any legal authorities present.
When I see the way the child's response changes over the course of being questioned, it just seems to me that he became confused and possibly scared. I remember last year when Lil Man was accused of grabbing a girl's chest. When I asked him about it he got really scared and started saying he couldn't remember what happened. After discussing this situation with the school officials, I discovered how poorly they handled the incident. I realized why my son was reacting the way he did. The teacher who made the accusation against him never bothered to give him a chance to explain what happened. This caused my son to feel pressured into saying he did something he didn't do.
What had happened, in fact, was that my son was trying to push two girls away from each other when they tried to fight. He was actually, stepping in to stop the fighting. When Lil Man tried to break into the fight his hand landed on the girl's chest somewhat roughly. The girl grabbed at her chest and the teacher seeing the girl rubbing her chest questioned her about what happened. She stated that Lil Man grabbed her chest and then all hell broke loose. Lil Man was accused of grabbing the little girl and no mention was made that he was trying to break apart a fight.
I was livid to say the least. Children can become convinced of a situation if it's an adult who steers them in a direction. It's hard to say what really happened in the situation with the 8 year old boy accused of murder. But it does break my heart to hear the innocence in his voice and the way the authorities seem to lead him in a direction and he seemed powerless to properly explain himself. For a child capable of murder he just didn't have any anger or bitterness in his tone, that you would expect in a child who knew what was going on.

I agree with you. :( I've seen some of his alleged taped confession and it's very clear to me that the police were in fact leading him. He does not sound angry or hostile either. Just like in the situation involving your son....children need to be given the time to explain why they did something. I'm also very saddened that he's been locked up (alone) all of this time and away from his mother/family members. This has to be very confusing and scary for him too. What I can't figure out though is how they were able to question him without his parent or an attorney present? Isn't that supposed to be against the law?
Goodness, how depressing!
You are raising a good lil man!
YOPur story re Lil Man made my blood boil. I hate that kind of thing and could just see myself rising to your son's defence.
Adults don't think sometimes.
I heard about this tragedy, but didn't follow it.
A friend of mine experienced a similar incident with her son at school and the next day the teacher apologized.
Listen, get the facts straight before you roll up on my kid or me! Humph.
