I tried. I failed. But I Will Conquer...

I tried to vote today for the second time. I failed again. After 3 hours of waiting in the blazing heat I gave up and decided to try a third time another day. I promised myself the third time will be the charm and I will make it to the booth. How are the early voting lines in your neck of the woods? In our area of the country the average wait is anywhere from 3-5 hours.

Despite not being successful in voting, I encountered some interesting people. Everyone seems to have a unique story to tell. Some of the stories were touching; others were inspiring; and still others were...um...let's just say strange. I spoke to a lady from Cuba who just got her citizenship this year (2009). In her broken English she explained why this election is so important because it's the first election she can vote in. She came to the US on a boat from Cuba. Due to the wet-foot, dry-foot policy she could have been sent back to Cuba. The boat she was in was intercepted by coast guards so according to the policy anyone from Cuba that comes via a boat must touch land or they will be returned to their homeland. The entire crew was lucky and received leniency. I was happy for her, but it was another sad reminder of the favouritism shown to Cubans.

There was a man in the line who was discussing with a friend his views on the black voter. The guy he was talking to was black. In his opinion all black people are voting for Obama because he is black. He believes black voters don't really care about the issues or what Obama stands for; they only want a black president in the Office to give them higher racial power in this country. He went on to spout other ignorant views, but I'll leave it at that.

I saw an elderly gentleman in a wheelchair on a ventilator. He was with family and a nurse. I was amazed at his stamina; his will and desire to vote. Here I am strong and able and I didn't have the courage to withstand the heat and long lines. I truly believe this election is most likely the most important elections of our lifetime.

Wow. I had no idea lines were so long anywhere for early voting! That is crazy. Please keep up your spirit and your stamina! I voted early in CO, but it was super easy, no wait at all (of course this was at 8:30 AM on Friday morning).

I voted for Obama because he understands that when ordinary people succeed, everyone succeeds. Because he understands that although I haven't a clue what it is like to be a single black mom in the Chicago South Side. Or if I don't understand what it is to be a pregnant Hispanic teen in my own community, I do understand that as an American these womens' hardships are a reflection of the society that we all live in. And if we don't work to help all Americans, we have failed as a nation.

Investing in education, health care, equal rights, all these things are investments in our future. Life may not be fair, but we can certainly invest in making the best of our future.

I wish I could think of something to help you and your fellow voters from far away. If you think of anything, let me know. And in the meantime, don't give up your vote!

Hey there!

There is a 2006 video online "THE AMERICAN BLACKOUT" and it chronicles the strategies that are devised to disenfranchise voters...DELIBERATELY creating long lines so that people will go home and not vote...turning people away who did NOT bother to read all of the rules about voter eligibility and believed ERRONEOUS information given at the polling sites.... many tactics are used.

Here's the link:

I encourage all black voters to know the rules, bring the policices with them to the polling site and bring ALL IDs even if told that they do not need to bring anything!!

Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

WOW. I can't belive lines are so long. We don't have early voting in my state. I'm hoping my polling place won't be too busy in the morning. My township that I live in is small & there are 2 polling places. But I guess you never know. I may be late for work.

I did absentee voting, I knew the lines were gonna be out of this world.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say, if Obama was running on the repub ticket black folk would not be voting for him..people suck with their ignorant ideas.

Eta-the majority of black people who vote democrat would not be voting for the repub ticket just because the candidate is black.

Anyway-my friend in Georgia waited 6 hours and he said not one black person left that line..lol. Don't know if I could do that but this is so important to people.

Hopefully the next time you go it'll be easier going.

I've been hearing about all the long lines on the news. I'm now glad that I was able to do absentee voting.
Hopefully the third time will be the charm.
