When Opportunity Comes Knocking
I think we all have something(s) that we've promised ourselves we will accomplish by a certain time. For me, it's to get my masters degree. I promised myself a few years back that I will obtain a master's while my children are still in school. Why, while they are in school you ask? Well, I just like the idea of my kids seeing me study alongside them.
When a good friend of mine who works at a local university called me a few weeks ago about a position at the local university I laughed at first. She was serious about me applying. I wasn't looking to go back to work and actually had plans to really concentrate on some options I have to make money at home. When my friend said, "If get the position you can get your master's for FREE!" All of a sudden the idea of going back to work took on a new tone.
"Hmmmmm" I thought to myself. Me. Going Back to work. Someone else watching my baby. The 8-5 grind. Monday blues. I had many reservations even though the thought of going back to school was very exciting. I discussed it with the Hubster and he basically let the final decision be mine. I prayed on it and decided to go for it. What ultimately helped me decide to give it a shot was being able to go back to school AND the fact after 6 months I can telecommute. I will be working with the online graduate programs. This being so, they really don't need us to be at the university to communicate with students. If all goes well with this job I will definately consider telecommuting.
Since Monday I've been in orientation as a graduate admissions advisor. I'm loving it, but it's been hard leaving the baby in someone else's care. He cries when I leave, but thankfully after a few minutes of distractions he's fine. The Hubster picks him up after he gets off so he's not at the sitter for long. He's usually at the sitter for only 4-5 hours a day. Once I'm done with orientation I won't be working on Mondays. The Hubster doesn't work on Thursdays and Fridays. So technically the baby will only be at the sitters on Tues, Wednesday and occasionally on Saturday if they need me to come in.
Lil Man is in school now and loving it, of course. So far everything is going good. He's still underchallenged, but as soon as testing is over they will begin to incorporate 2nd grade level work into his program. Next year he can test for the gifted program and then we can move toward that. That is still sometime away so we don't need to rush to make any decisions where that's concerned.
Folks, if you don't see me around much in the next week or so, you know where I am. Once things settle down with orientation I should resume to my normal level of posting.

That's awesome. Enjoy your new journey.
What a wonderful opportunity. I also did my MBA while my son was here at school. I took him to class with me sometimes but he was older than yours. Good luck.
That is BEYOND exciting!
Hey there! {waves}
I am new to this blog!
Congratulations on the new milestone in your life!!
Exciting news!
You mentioned your child NOT BEING challenged...you can always find books online that your child can work with at home...workbooks can be ordered that are a higher grade level and your child can work on them and that way your child will continue to be developed according to his own aptitude.
I spent two years in high school (like Condi Rice) and went on to undergrad. Just continue to feed your child's mind even if he is in a "regular" school and not in a school for the gifted.
I don't always recommend the schools for the gifted because many of those children are very emotionally-underdeveloped in social intercourse.
Anyway...I hope this is not too long! Feel free to drop by my place anytime!

Wow, that is some great news, Ana! Congrats on such an exciting time in your life. You are making the best decision for you and your family, and I am happy for you!
Congrats on your new position! :)
Can I do a dance! Girl, how excited are you?!
Blessings in this new season. I know that success is yours. Go for it and continue to be that light whether here in blogsville or in the University.
You give many of us inspiration to move in that direction. Holla!
What a great opportunity! I'm so happy for you! :-D
Good luck with the new job! sounds so promising!
Congratulations on your new career! Looking forward to hearing about your adventures, sounds like a lovely opportunity (with a free masters to boot, you can't beat that!)
Congratulations, Ana! What a wonderful opportunity... way too good to pass up. I'm so glad that you decided to go for it. All the best of luck and blessings as you embark on your new adventure!
Hey Ana! I am so excited for you. God blesses when you least expect it. I am planning to go back to get my MBA as well, preferably in Sustainability. Coming up with the cash is the issue without having to take out student loans. My son (now a teen) has been in the gifted program at his school since he was eight. He is very well adjusted and has friends and a social life outside of his honors classes as he participates in sports and community service. I say give your children all of the challenges they can get! Anyway, it was good to hear of your good fortunes. I will enjoy reading about your green adventures in school!
I'm so thrilled for you! What an amazing opportunity for you...and FREE. You can't beat that. I'm sure you'll keep us posted.
Way to go!!! I'm so excited for you!!! You had the courage to take on this new challenge, all will be well with you and your family because of it.
I've just started back school as well. Going for my BA in Psychology.
