Eco-Friendly Tip #13: Be a Diva!

That's right let the diva in you come out. Here's the deal girls I'm going to get a little personal with you. We're all women (If there are men reading my blog you may want to skip this post) so discussing this natural part of our womanhood shouldn't be an issue.

I'm sure most women are familiar with TSS (toxic shock syndrome) that can result from allowing a tampon to remain inserted for too long. However, tampons as well as sanitary pads can cause further risks to our body and the environment, as well.

Both tampons and sanitary napkins are made from materials that contain surfactants, additives, adhesives and rayon. A process known as bleaching is done to rayon to make it usable to create tampons and pads. A by-product of bleaching is dioxin, a carcinogen, that when leached into the environment has serious adverse environmental and health effects.

Diva Cups are a smart alternative to the usual tampons and pads in that they are an eco-friendly switch. These menstrual cups are reusable and made from completely 100% hypoallergenic silicone material. In the past, there were scares concerning silicone due to the risk of ruptures in breast implants. The process used to create the silicone Diva Cups has cleared all FDA and Health Canada requirements for safety and are strong and durable.

These cups are safe on our bodies and because they are reusable make them a responsible environmental choice.

I had never heard of these until I was a few months pregnant (middle of last year)... so I haven't gotten any, but am anxious...well, not super anxious...but I am interested in trying it out!

I just started hearing of these too.. for some reason I've been almost afraid to try them! lol I need to suck it up and at least give them a go and see how I like them. I've heard many women RAVE about them and they all swear that once you get the hang of them you'll never use another pad or tampon again.

Wanted to let you know that I'm working on a 'green vaccine' article. I'll post it soon, possibly today. I figured you'd be interested since you have an infant like me. :)

I've tried many different things but for me nothing beats a soft cloth pad. My favorites are not fancy just soft flat cloth diapers folded like a pad. These are soft, thin, easy to wash and dries fast and when combined with a really good outer layer (for leak proof) it feels so good next to my skin.
I guess I'm just strange like that....

I'll preach on the diva cup! lighter periods, no more having to buy tampons and no more messing up the good sheets..it works really well if used correctly, been using one for 5 years and it's the best investment evah!

I tried Instead in the past. While I love the idea of environmental friendly, the concept did not work well for my heavier flow. I do know quite a few people who swear by their diva cups so i recommend them though I can't personally use them.

I was actually diagnosed with TSS several years ago while in the military. They said it came from me using tampons and that I would never be able to concieve. Three years later I had Johnathan my oldest....
I was always told that you period is supposed to flow so I just stick to my pads..for now...

I have been going back and forth about what to get instead of tampons and just can't seem to pick one. Maybe I will give this a try, who knows maybe it will be the thing I have been looking for.

WOW! First time I heard of such a product. I don't think it would work for me, but certainly something worth sharing.
