Thrifty Thursday: Feelin' Gas Pains, Are You?
I know I am! I'm curious as to what is the average price of gas in your local area. If you aren't to shy to tell what region you are in and the average cost of gas, please share. I'm in the Southern part of Florida and the average price of fuel has now reached $3.65.
Here are a few frugal steps you can take to help out with the soaring cost of gas:
1) Internet:
*MapQuest and MSN Autos collect info from the Oil Pricing Information Service (OPIS) to track gas prices all over the country. MapQuest also supplies data on where to buy diesel and alternative fuel.
*GasBuddy.com and GasPriceWatch.com depend on "spotters" or stations themselves to provide info on prices around the country.
2) Gas Prices on the go:
If your phone supports sending a text message to an e-mail address, you can get prices on the go from gas@gasbuddy.com, sms@mobgas.com or gas@fuelgo.com. If not, try 411sync.com's service by sending the word "gas" and your ZIP code to 415-676-8397. The services are free, but your cell-phone company will charge you for text messages if they're not included in your plan.
3) Cross the tracks (In other words, go to the ghetto..lol):
More affluent neighborhoods tend to have higher prices. Some of the reasons for higher prices are elevated taxes and higher overhead due to more expensive land.
4)Stay away from freeway (service stations)
5)Wholesale buying clubs:
Warehouse stores like Costco, Sam's Club, BJ's Wholesale Club often offer some of the lowest gas prices in town.
6) USE LESS GAS:
Surprisingly enough, although the prices of gas are higher now than they were this time last year, Americans on average are using 1.4% more gas this year. If you're in the market for a new vehicle perhaps you can considerpurchasing one of the more fuel efficent vehicles . Perhaps you would consider buying one of the 12 greenest vehicles for 2008 ?
Have you ever thought of carpooling with friends, family or neighbors if you happen to be traveling in the same direction? Cut down your impulse driving. For example plan out your shopping trips so that you hit as many stores in one driving section as possible.

Thanks for sharing your tips. I'll have to visit the site that you suggested.
Oh, my hubby and I work from our home. And with our son being homeschooled there are days that the car doesn't move.
Love the tips. I'm going to pass them on!
Yeah, we're feeling it. Thanks for the tips, maybe that will help us feel it less!
Since we're in oil-country, I guess we're doing pretty good compared to other parts of the country. Gas was $3.47 yesterday.
Being in a small town means you have to drive 30-40 mins for major shopping, so I plan my trips carefully, ride share with my mother and stock up at the store to reduce trips.
Great tips! I need all the help that I can get in order to save a dollar. Thanks!
Nice tips! I've been filling up only early in the morning or later in the evening to get more gas and less fumes. We're at 3.45 a gallon, I can only imagine what tomorrow's price will be.
Gas prices here are now anywhere from $3.95-$4.09 per gallon!!! I thought I as seeing things, but it's true here in Chicago. Ugh...:( My husband drives 6-7 days a week for his work, but thank goodness his employers pretty much are paying for our gas expenses right now! We are truly blessed! ;) I work only part-time (2 days a week) and it's less than 3 miles from our house. I'm seriously thinking about buying a bike right now.
