Eco-friendly tip #9: Teflon is OUT!
Do you remember back in the day, the good 'ole 80s when Teflon cookware was the rage! Anyone and everyone had some sort of Teflon cookware. Some folks had Teflon cookware and they didn't even know how to cook. It was just the "it" thing to be able to say your cookware had Teflon on it. Never before was cooking so easy until this synthetic non-stick property came into our lives. Folks (ahem..the hubster) who used to burn everything or had to drown food with oil to prevent it from sticking, could now leisurely cook an egg without blinking twice. Yeah, Teflon was da STUFF, y'all!
Fast forward 3 decades and the once godsent, saviour of cooking has now been cast to cookware hell. The love affair with Telfon is over as it's been discovered that the very chemicals that makes it slippery, namely polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and perfluorooctanic acid (PFOA) break down at high temperatures (meaning the chemicals slide right off the pan and into your dinner.) Not nice!
Not only is Teflon bad on the environment and your health it's also bad on your wallet. Teflon products have a limited useful lifetime. You may opt for stainless steel, cast iron or the last innovative invention Thermolon. This non-stick property does not contain PTFE or PFOA and does not break down or wear over time. Are you feeling me on this? You are helping both the environment and your wallet.GreenPan offers a 6 piece set for under $100. Believe me when I say I plan to buy a set! And don't be jelly when you see me cooking with mine and try to come on the sly wanting to borrow a pot or two. Uh-uh can't have that. Get your own!

I've been meaning to ditch the calphalon and go for the stainless steel for some time now. This is the perfect excuse for some new cookware. Thanks.
We have stainless steel and cast iron, love my cast iron.
I use only stainless and cast iron, I hate teflon HATE IT!!!!
BTW lol sprinkling some good luck over on you.. ;)

I didn't know that! Wowza...I've got some good ole cast iron, but will def. check out those that you mentioned!
Teflon sucks, huh?
Guess that sums up the Reagan era.
I inherited my grandmother's set of 5 cast iron skillets. I just love them! Teflon is scary, so are those silicone baking pans that are so popular today.
Essentially, by 2050 we need all activities outside agriculture to be near zero carbon emitting if we are to stop carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere growing
Hmmm.. this is very timely, because as much as I resist cooking, I was trying to cook some semblance of a meal last night when I realized my pots were older than my marriage (going on 15 years now). Think it's time for somethin' new. Might as well be sans carcinogens. But those chemicals impart such a nice flavor, no?
Thanks for the education.
