Can the Green Pendelum Get Swung Too Far?

I've been pondering this question for awhile now as I try to find the right balance of living a green lifestye, while keeping a proper perspective on being green. My family's gradual change to an eco-friendly lifestyle has been a good thing. Actually, it's been a great thing. We've become healthier. The hubster has lost weight that I fussed at him tenderly encouraged him to loose previously. I feel good that when Lil Man is retested for cholestrol there will be significant improvement. Lastly, as a family we are being better stewards of the earth. All these changes are proving we are on the right track.

Why then the concern do you ask? Perhaps it due to the fact that on several occasions the hubster had to put me in check. At the time, I thought he was over reacting or not really on board with my earth-cause mission. However, now that I've had sometime to reflect on each situation, I realize he brought me back to reality. If today I don't send as many plastic bottles, plastic bags, cardboard boxes, ectera, ectera to be recycled as I did yesterday, It's. Really. Okay. No, I don't need to call the hubster to bring my canvas bags to the grocery store because I forgot them. It's. Really. Okay. that I forgot them this time. I was slowly slipping into an obsessive-compulsive behaviour that left me no room for error. Worse yet, I was beginning to expect that level of perfection for others.

I've seen more and more while blog hopping how easy it is to cross the line between environmental consciousness and environmental obsession. It happens so easily I don't even think some folks realize they've made that transition. The potential to become an earth worshipper or a person who glorifies the environment exists in anyone who has a burden for the earth. What I've discovered is that when this happens the very thing (environment) we are seeking to save actually doesn't get saved at all. In essence, we've shifted the ecological problem from one area to another area, therefore accomplishing nothing. I'll post more indepth about my thought on this in another post.

My personal opinion is that sustainability is the answer:

...meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs...

If we all could learn to use just what we need and no more, there would be plenty to go around. Furthermore, our children and our children's children and so on would get there fair share.

As the Indian proverbs says, "We did not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We borrowed it from our children."

I have a question for you? Do you find it more expensive now buying foods living a green life & eating healthier?

I think you have perspective on the matter. I am gradually going green but there is nothing that bothers me more than an obsessive person about it all. We need to share, yes. We need to inform, yes. But we do not need to preach!

@Keya: I guess I would say yes & no. Organic is more expensive because there isn't enough demand to bring prices down. However, we don't buy everything organic. Not every product needs to be organic so we try to research where we need to spend our money on organic.

Also we've cut back on eating out and prefer to use that money on healthier eating. We try to stay away from large chain organic markets and opt for local farms, co-ops and the like. Sometimes you can get more for your money this way. So to answer your question we've kind of rearranged our budget to spend less in one area to help accommodate another area.

Buying in bulk helps a lot too.

@Amber: I totally agree with you! I've seen blogs where if a person isn't COMPLETELY living a green life than they might as well not even mention what they do. Sickening.

Hear ya on this darling! Great post. Nothing like keeping it real and in perspective. Balance is the key to everything.

We buy both organic and non-organic and try to do our part. But that won't have me using cloth diapers anytime soon.

I also encourage people to grow their own produce if they can, saves alot of money. This year we are adding potatos and garlic to our garden...can't wait on not having to buy garlic anymore, it's so much tastier when it's fresh.

Thank you for that post. I know I am not the greenest person, but I'm slowly getting there. You're right that folks can go overboard and not even know it!

PS As soon as I unpack my cool resuable bags, I toss them right back into the mini van for the next time.
