Thrifty Thursday: Homemade Trail Mix
In my effort to get more fiber into Lil Man I got the brilliant idea to buy some trail mixes from The Whole Food Market. It sure wasn't cheap per lb, but ya gotta do what ya got to do, right? I gave him some for snack and he promptly refused to eat it. He didn't like "this dried fruit" or "that funny looking nut" and it "tasted funny" in his mouth yady-yady-yada. You get my drift. Okay, so my plan fell flat in my face. Then the bright idea came to me to ask him what fruits and nuts he likes. BINGO!
"I like apples Ma! And peaches! And you can put cashews in it! How about peanuts too, Ma! That would be good. I luvvvvv raisins, but only the red ones."
We were on a roll! He gave me a good list to start with.
Then he came to this conclusion...
"Put some Halloween candy corns! Those are vegetables, Ma."
Ummm nahhhhhhhhhh...back that up baby to where you left off at peanuts.
Anyway, he came up with a good list of nuts and dried fruits he likes so off to the market we went to make our purchase. We bought about an 1/8 lb of each ingredient which ended up being about 1 lb to 1 1/4 lbs of mix. We ended up saving $4.48 and the great thing is the mix has all the ingredients that Lil Man likes. Now there is no excuse for him to pick at it and waste good food for nothing.

great idea momma!
That is a great idea, Ana! I am totally doing this with my girls! Oh, and lil man's candycorn suggestion... that is just precious! What a doll!
That's great.
Great idea. I'll have to give this a try next week when I go to the store, thanks.
