Eco-friendly tip #1: Au Naturale

One of the things that attracted the hubster to me is my simple, easy going hair style. When it comes to hair up keep, for me, less maintenance is better. Overall I'm a low maintenance kinda gal. You'll rarely see me wearing make up. I do wear lip gloss and trim my eyebrows regularly. I only maintain those two things for the betterment of society. I'd cause quite a few sore eyes with my bushy eye brows and parched lips if I didn't do anything. ha! Other than that I don't spend a lot of time primping myself. It's the tomboy in me.

The funny thing about the whole thing that I love to do hair - other people's hair, that is. When it comes to my hair, the style has to be quick, simple and easy to maintain. I have to have a style that fits my ever active, moving and flowing lifestyle so I opted to go natural a couple of years ago. I've toyed on and off with my natural hair for about 7 years.

One year I cut my hair very short in a boyish shave and had the experience of being mistaken for a boy. Bawhaaaaa! I was in line at Starbucks and this elderly gentleman came from behind me an said "Son, do you mind telling me where the bathroom is?" I didn't think the man was talking to me so I ignored him. He tapped me on my shoulder roughly and said "I have a grandson about your age. What are you about 14? Kids these days are rude!" and then he scurried off. lol

Anyway, I got sidetracked here.... As I was saying I've had natural hair on and off for about 7 years. However, 2 years ago I made the permanent change to go au naturale. I absolutely love my wooly head of hair. Natural hair gives me the freedom I need to do my hair at my pace and not according to a set style. It's all part of my aim to live a simpler, more basic, organic life. Furthermore, a few years ago when a study came out that suggesed a possible link between black hair care products and breast cancer it was enough for me to say adieu to perming. I realize the investigation is inconclusive, and some researchers say there is no validity to the study. Despite the controversy, I feel better knowing I'm not putting all those harmful chemicals on my body or in the ground.

I realize natural hair isn't for all sistahs and that's okay. However, what we all can do is find products that are environmentally safer. I've been looking into eco-friendly products and am excited to share what I've come up with. Furthermore, I've discovered alternative methods to care for our hair (natural or not) using basic natural ingredients and can't wait to share this info! I'll share these tips in my tip #2 next week.

I've come across a few websites and books for women of color who are into natural hair styling. I thought I'd pass the information along for those who might be interested in making the change or those seeking more information on natural hair care management.

Cool links, I gotta go check them out. I wear my hair natural, but in the fall/winter/spring I get my hair pressed.

I checked out the links and enjoyed them. I perm but haven't had anything done to it in about 8 months now. I like to be able to wear it straight or curly/wavy as it suits my mood (or time). The link with the before and after had a link to a TX shop close to work that I may have to check out for myself!

Thanks again.

My sisterlocks are the most low maintenance natural style I've ever had and I maintain them myself. They are a good alternative because you can style them just like permed hair.

I'm with you though, after I read that study, I was like "I've got to get away from the creamy crack" and believe me it was total crack to me..lol, The study made perfect sense to me.

I so agree with just how low maintenance and wonderful natural hair can be. I've been natural for going on 8 years- never once considered going back to chemicals. One thing, the "natural" hair salon you linked to does have great styles but many of them are accomplished using a "silkener" which is another term for a relaxer.
